This has become a symbol of the chofesh hagadol (summer break) for me and for my students at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu in the Beit Shean Valley. For two weeks I have the honor of teaching English to the founders of this religious kibbutz, those who have joined in their holy endeavors over the years, and their offspring. It is hot (about 110 degrees fahrenheit in the sun) and hard work; however, I leave each year with a tremendous sense that I make a difference in some very special people's lives - as they make in mine. Young (early twenties) and innocent (he hasn't been involved in any gay activity,) he is grappling with feelings of being different, of having thoughts, of trying to work through these issues so he can someday have a normal life and family. There is no trauma in his past and he has an excellent relationship with his liberal and accepting parents. So good in fact that when he told them about his predilection to homosexuality his mother said to him, "So why don't you want to live as a gay man?" The issue isn't theological, although he is religious. It isn't related to his family. So why doesn't he? Its name change was to memorialize Shiloh Levi z"l, a soldier who fell in the 1982 helicopter disaster in Southern Lebanon. The bride in this story made me think of my mother who was a beautiful American girl who married a talmid chacham who came to American after the Holocaust and only spoke Yiddish. People wondered whether their marriage would be successful, but their tremendous emunah in Hashem helped them to build a beautiful bayit nee'man b'Yisrael. This is one of our family's favorite Uncle Moishy songs, and when my kids were younger they used to love listening for their names to appear in the song. Of course, some were more fortunate than others. With names like Yitzchak and Moshe, you're bound to have your name pop up in a list of common names. My daughter Shuli was not as lucky. I was already married with a few children and living thousands of miles away. It was not a simple undertaking - but I decided to go. She welcomed me warmly and excitedly and begged me to sit near her, so we could speak. Happily Isat with her at the Kabalos Panim, but her second request could not be fulfilled.
