Dear Dr. Respler: I am writing in response to your August 3 column. You featured a letter from a woman who describes her husband as being angry. In your response you addressed the possibility that the husband was depressed. It appears from what the letter-writer said that her husband is dealing with the family's serious financial difficulties and is challenged with sick parents. She says some of the smartest and funniest things, but sometimes what she says is chutzpadik. While I try very hard not to laugh when she does this, the things she says are absolutely hysterical and adorable. Here's my problem: when my five-year-old son imitates what she says, it then sounds extremely chutzpadik. This leaves me in a difficult predicament, because if I just laughed two minutes earlier, what am I supposed to do when my son says the same thing as my daughter? Dear Dr. Respler: At the risk of sounding like an alarmist, I wish to raise an alarm regarding men with anger issues that adversely affect their relationships with their wives and children. In these cases, the wives should have their husbands examined by a competent neurologist. The reasoning behind this suggestion: a person's sudden and unexplained change in personality/executive functions can be a sign of a serious medical situation. Dear Dr. Respler: My husband is an excellent spouse and a wonderful father to our children. He is also a devoted son to his parents. I will say that even thought he is under financial strain, he supports us in style and I have full-time help in the house. I have some kind of background in psychology, so intellectually I realize that she is acting out because she wants attention. But in the moment, it is very hard to deal with. Dear Dr. Yael, Growing up in a frum home with minimal interaction with the opposite gender, I initially thought my wife's mood swings were the norm, the kind that comes along with female hormones. I quickly began to realize that my assumption was incorrect. If her behavior were affected by it being a certain time of the month, it would not last weeks or months. I began noticing how negative she was. I would be accused of saying and doing things which never happened. My every move would be scrutinized and twisted against me. Her expectations were constantly changing and I can never get it right. Whatever went wrong was always my fault. There was no middle ground with her - everything was either all good or all bad. Dear Dr. Yael: As I am diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a subject you have been addressing recently, I am bothered by your view that, "BPD is a very difficult disorder to treat." In the DSM-IV-TR (a text revision of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, page 842) it states, "Contrary to many clinicians' preconceived notions, the prognosis for many individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder is good." Read Article 18) Posted Jun 02 2010 Being A Good Wife Is Sometimes Not Enough By Sara Freund, LCSW Sometimes a few sessions of marital therapy can solve problems that were festering for years. The married couple have often locked themselves into such a struggle; they need help to simply untangle the knot. This has a lot to do with the high level of emotion they are feeling - just think of the expression "I am so angry I can't think straight. The husband and wife often cannot think logically or clearly. Every issue between them is filled with layers of anger, hurt, betrayal and fear that has built up over the years due to miscommunication.
