They had discovered that she was six-months pregnant and being pregnant in a concentration camp under the Third Reich was a death sentence. We all knew she was taken to Auschwitz to die in the gas chamber or on Dr. Joseph Mengele's operation table at the conclusion of one of his infamous experiments on unborn Jewish embryos and their mothers. We all, the unfortunate young woman's camp sisters, cried all night long. All this is depicted on the Arch of Titus built shortly thereafter to commemorate Titus' great victory over the Jews. The work of artist Joseph Salamon from Denmark, himself a survivor of the Holocaust, the sculpture seems painfully anonymous. However, the black polished pedestal lists their names in alphabetical order -- Ala Gertner, Roza Robota, Regina Safirsztajn, Ester Wajcblum -- and the brief, stark inscription: "Martyred Heroines of the Jewish Resistance in Auschwitz. Executed On January 5, 1945." Nothing more. And if you were to ask who the main heroes of the drama were, any child will tell you - Moshe Rabbeinu, of course, and his brother Aharon. No need to elaborate, the Torah is clear and explicit in assigning these roles. Despite his reluctance Moshe is singled out for his assignment and so is Aharon. The voice of the Almighty is distinct in reiterating their mission, and they, faithful servants, obeyed the Divine command, and earned their place in the limelight. Read Article 16) Posted Feb 03 2010 Rachel and Shelly: Two Remarkable Jewish Women By Prof. Livia Bitton Jackson They lived far apart -- half a century in time and thousands of miles in space. Rachel was born in northern Russia, and died in the Land of Israel in 1931. She had been in the prime of her life, but contracted tuberculosis, an incurable disease in those days. Shelly was born in southern New Jersey, and died in the United States in 1985. She had been in the prime of her life when she contracted cancer, a sometimes-incurable disease in our days. Now they are united in eternal rest, in the land that both loved with a passion. They are buried right next to each other in a cemetery on the shores of the Kinneret - the Sea of Galilee.
